Kalle Slaap Honoured as Fellow of the British Horological Institute During Visit to Upton Hall – October 25th, 2025

Upton Hall, UK — What began as a proud moment for Dutch watchmaker Kalle Slaap, owner of the renowned watchmaking workshop and educational platform Chronoglide, turned into a day he will never forget. Invited to Upton Hall by the British Horological Institute (BHI), Slaap believed the occasion was to officially present and enter his book, Watchmaking Explained, into the institute’s historic library.

But the BHI had a much bigger surprise in store.

During the ceremony, and to the complete astonishment of Slaap and his team, he was formally awarded the title of Fellow of the British Horological Institute (FBHI)—one of the highest recognitions in the field of horology. The announcement left him visibly moved.

“I was deeply honoured and humbled,” Slaap said afterward. “Since the moment I started working in the watch industry, the BHI has always been an institute I looked up to. To receive this title… it’s just amazing.”

Slaap travelled to the UK accompanied by a team of nine: members of the Chronoglide workshop, and several Dutch watchmakers who have worked closely with him over the years. The group attended the ceremony at the historic Upton Hall, where Slaap’s book was officially added to the BHI Library—an achievement in itself for any author in the field of horology.

Watchmaking Explained has gained attention for its clear, accessible breakdown of complex watchmaking concepts, making it valuable not only to professionals but to students and enthusiasts entering the craft. Its inclusion in the BHI Library ensures it will support future generations of horologists.

With the newly granted title, Slaap may now proudly add the prestigious “FBHI” designation behind his name—an honour that reflects his dedication to craftsmanship, education, and the advancement of watchmaking.

For Slaap, the day was more than a ceremony; it was a milestone in a lifelong passion for horology. And for Chronoglide, it marks yet another achievement in its mission to bridge tradition, innovation, and learning in the art of watchmaking.
